In his IDB message of May 22, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Mr. Ban Ki-moon said: “… The most cost-effective and feasible method of control is prevention. To be successful, this strategy requires collaboration among Governments, economic sectors and non-governmental and international organizations. A country can only prevent invasions if it knows which species may invade, where they may come from and the best management options for dealing with them…” Download IDB booklet (Eng)
BioModel comments: modern biodiversity modelling i.e. species distribution models (SDM’s) have to help with prediction of potential invasions and to prevent related (expected) threats – in forestry, agriculture, nature conservation, protected areas management etc.
Global Biodiversity means about 1.6 million known species, and that is thought to be serious underestimate of the total number of it. The United Nations proclaimed May 22 The International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB) to increase understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues. When first created by the Second Committee of the UN General Assembly in late 1993, 29 December (the date of entry into force of the Convention of Biological Diversity), was designated The International Day for Biological Diversity – see more details with CBD.
The BioModel team states that modern biodiversity modelling gives more chances to the nature and … to the global society, it may help with appropriate future projections obtaining. See original version of the BioModel mosaic here .
