Fire salamander (Salamandra salamandra) habitats change modelling in EEBIO Region in scope of the IMAGE climate change data: GLM-scenario by 2050

Salamandra salamandra (Linnaeus, 1758) common fire salamander, fire salamander, salamandra plyamysta (ukr) A number of large, stable populations of this salamander exist in Central Europe. Nevertheless, in Ukraine it is the species from the Red Data Book of Ukraine of 1994s’ [1]. It is associated with wet cool deciduous, mixed, or rarely, coniferous forests with well shaded brooks and small rivers. Within the mountain forest belt (in Carpathians also), the species can be found in woodlands, glades and forest edges, rocky slopes, dense bush, and herbaceous vegetation. The principal threats include localized general habitat destruction, unsympathetic forest management, and pollution of breeding sites by agrochemicals, collection for commercial purposes (i.e., the pet trade), introduction of predatory species and population fragmentation. The mortality of adults on roads is a localized threat in some parts of its range. ULRMC’ Biotic-GIS-group built a GLM-scenario of the habitat changes for the species (in scope of expected climate change and which was based on IMAGE-model climate change data by 2050). The GLM-scenariou demonstrated probable active trend i.e changes of the animal areal in Carpathian Region specially and that was categorised by us as ‘decreasing locally’ – see more with summarized table [1] on the BioModel web-page. The unexpected new habitats location outside of the Carpathian Mountains is a GLM-responce of grids of the model to the incorporated IMAGE-data. The sources have been used for the modelling included: i) digital Ukraine 1:200.000 (2005); IMAGE-data by 2050; ESRI ArcMap 9.2, GIF-animator and R-software; publications [1, 2].

The model is published with the assistance of ULRMC, funded by ‘Projection of Species- and Species-Climate Based Models on to the GLOBIO Ukraine Region, and Scenarios Development’ Project according to the Contract Е/555050/01/МО (2006) between The Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency (MNP, Bilthoven) and International Association ‘Ukrainian Land and Resource Management Center’ (ULRMC, Kyiv).
