Jackal, Northern Jackal – Canis aureus Linnaeus, 1758 – is rare species in the GLOBIO Ukraine Region. In 1990s scientific publications forecasted that it started with migration, enlargement of the area to the West. In EEBIO maps in 2005 we described that some predictions, which showed probable new habitats of the species in Donetska and some Western administrative oblasts in Ukraine – by 2005 and 2010 (using Volokh, 2003). For new GIS modelling we used follows sources (Ru.): i) BioDAT (1980s), prepared by A. Puzachenko – www.biodat.ru/db/areal; ii) Volokh (2003); iii) Kuliev (2002); iv) Dobrov (2003); v) Roshenko (1998). In addition: IUCN 2007- Canis aureus – In – IUCN 2007 – European Mammal Assessment – http://ec.europa.eu/environment/nature/conservation/species/ema/ – downloaded on 11 May 2007. New integrated map package together with map-animation demonstrates that active enlargement of the jackal natural habitat to the west takes place indeed. Technical union of GEO-tif sources by 1980s (that lighted better that an Eastern part of Natural habitats) with local sources (on confirmed observation of the species in the Southern Ukraine in 1998, 2002, 2003 etc.) was a starting point for GLM. Final GLM will cover territory of 10 countries. Main causes of change can include ‘land use’ (fragmentation of steppe reed-bad habitats), infrastructure pressures (disturbance and ‘corridors’), and climate change (desertification of the South).
